Nate came out first thing in the morning to help with my clogged sewer main. He was very professional and kind. He explained everything with no difficulty and offered multiple cost-tiered options. Mainly whether we would utilize a camera in the process of snaking the main. I appreciated being offered the option. We went with the camera process. So we could fully diagnose the issue, and determine if this would be a recurring problem.
We found roots growing in an old, 2-foot, cast-iron section of my main drainage pipe.
He used a blade attachment and cleared the obstruction to the best of his ability. Then left me with a quote to have the 2-foot section of cast iron replaced with PVCโ€”which is only a small section that penetrated the foundation of my home.
I was very happy with the service, and most importantly the transparent approach which allowed me to make informed decisions.
Nateโ€™s customer service skills were out of this world. I advise GEM Plumbing to invest in this young man.

Incredible company.
I had two whole house central AC units replaced (19 yrs old) and their team and other parts of the company (Plumbling, electrical, etc.) worked together to do an unbelieable installation in very hot conditions. My hats off to your company and we are so impressed that I contracted GEM to install a whole house 25kw generator.

I was able to schedule an appointment for the next day. The technician was great. Chris went over everything that needed to be done and explained it clearly. Very professional. He was also able to offer a discount and waived the fee for the service call. When I reviewed the bill that night, there was an error and the fee hadnโ€™t been waived. When I called Gem the next day, they saw the error and immediately corrected it. Said the refund would be put on my credit card. Very happy with the service.

I am very happy with my well water pump service. David Chapman and his associate were professional, friendly and respectful. David showed me how to change my filter for which I am truly grateful.
It was super easy booking online The next day the dispatcher, (unfortunately I donโ€™t know her name) called to offer an earlier appointment. She was very polite and kind.
My whole transaction was smooth and pleasant from start to finish!

How to Know When You Need a New Water Heater Installed

Some water heater problems are minor; others are serious.

These issues often appear together in failing water heaters. GEM helps New Bedford residents understand what they mean.

Most water heaters last 8 to 12 years with proper care. If yours is in that age range or older, efficiency has dropped and failure could come any time. Replacing now gives you control over the timing.

Rust or corrosion visible on the outside of your water heater usually means worse conditions inside. Once corrosion sets in, tank failure is a matter of time. Replacing before a leak occurs prevents water damage.

If showers are getting cut short or you’re running out of hot water during normal use, your tank may be losing capacity. Sediment buildup and aging components reduce how much hot water the system can deliver.

Metallic or sulfur odors coming from your hot water indicate problems inside the tank. Bacteria growth or a failing anode rod are common causes. In older systems, these issues often mean replacement is the better path forward.

We Install All Types of Water Heaters in New Bedford

Choosing the right water heater means matching capacity to your household’s needs. GEM guides you to the best solution.

Here’s a look at the types of water heaters we install in New Bedford:

Tank water heater installation in New Bedford is the tried-and-true choice for most households. These units store 40-80 gallons of heated water, ready whenever you need it. Tank models work with gas or electric power, install affordably, and deliver dependable performance for families running showers, laundry, and dishes throughout the day. For consistent hot water without surprises, a properly sized tank water heater gets the job done.

Tankless water heater installation in New Bedford appeals to homeowners who want endless hot water and energy savings. These compact units heat water on demand as it passes through, so you never run out mid-shower. Tankless systems mount on walls, freeing up floor space in tight basements or utility closets. GEM installs tankless water heaters in New Bedford homes looking for efficiency and long-term value.

Whether tank or tankless, today’s high-efficiency water heaters cut energy use without sacrificing performance. GEM installs ENERGY STAR certified models that qualify for rebates and lower your monthly utility bills. We’ll help you weigh upfront costs against long-term savings to find the smartest choice for your New Bedford home.

Water Heater Installation FAQs

What warranties apply to new water heaters?

Manufacturer warranties on tank water heaters generally cover the tank for 6 to 12 years depending on the model. GEM helps New Bedford homeowners understand what’s protected and for how long.

What size water heater do I need for my New Bedford home?

The right size depends on your household’s actual hot water usage, not just your home’s square footage. A family of four in New Bedford typically needs a 40 to 50 gallon tank, while a couple might be fine with 30 gallons. GEM’s technicians consider peak usage times, like when everyone’s getting ready in the morning, and recommend a size that meets your demand without wasting energy heating water you won’t use. We’ll size your system based on how your family actually lives.

Can I get rebates on a new water heater?

Yes, if you choose qualifying high-efficiency equipment. Mass Save provides rebates for New Bedford residents who install certain models, particularly heat pump water heaters. These rebates can offset a significant portion of the equipment cost. GEM knows which models qualify and can help you apply for the rebates you’re entitled to.

Do I need a permit for water heater installation?

In most cases, yes. Water heater installation typically requires a permit to ensure the work meets local codes. GEM handles permitting as part of our standard service for New Bedford customers. We pull the necessary permits and schedule inspections so you don’t have to navigate that process yourself.

How does GEM determine what capacity water heater my household needs?

We look at several factors specific to your New Bedford home: how many people live there, number of bathrooms, whether you have high-flow showerheads or standard fixtures, and when your peak usage occurs. A household where everyone showers in the morning has different needs than one where usage is spread throughout the day. We also consider your existing infrastructure since upgrading from a 40-gallon to an 80-gallon tank may require electrical or venting modifications.
