Signs of Frozen Pipes

Frozen pipes don’t always announce themselves right away, but your home will usually give you clues.

Knowing what to look for can help you act quickly and prevent serious water damage. If you spot any of these signs over the winter, give us a call right away for frozen pipe repair services.

For pipes that are exposed, such as those under sinks, you may be able to see frost accumulate on the exterior of the pipe. This is often a warning sign that the pipe is frozen.

Pipes only freeze when the outside temperature is well below freezing. When the outside temperature is below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, you should begin to take precautions to prevent vulnerable pipes from freezing.

If you turn on the faucet and no water comes out, this could be a sign that your pipe is frozen. If you turn on a tap and only a trickle comes out, ice may be blocking the flow inside the pipe, even if it isn’t fully frozen yet.

Banging, clanking, or whistling sounds when you turn on a faucet can signal restricted water flow caused by ice inside the line.

Ice expands inside pipes. That pressure can cause the pipe to swell, split, or crack. If you notice any visible damage, it’s important to act quickly before the pipe bursts.

If a frozen pipe has already cracked, you might see water stains on ceilings or walls, peeling paint, warped flooring, or unexplained puddles. This is a sign that the issue has escalated and needs immediate professional attention.

How We Fix Frozen Pipes

The right frozen pipe repair depends on the extent of the damage.

GEM takes a careful, step-by-step approach to address frozen pipes and restore your plumbing safely, and protect your home from further issues.

If the pipe is frozen but hasn’t burst, we use professional-grade equipment to safely and gradually thaw the blockage. This helps restore water flow while minimizing the risk of cracks caused by sudden temperature changes.

Once water flow is restored, we thoroughly inspect the pipe and surrounding areas for hidden cracks or weak spots. Freezing temperatures can compromise pipe integrity, so we make sure no small issue turns into a bigger problem later.

If a section of pipe has cracked or split, we perform precise repairs to restore strength and function. Our fully stocked service trucks allow us to complete most repairs on the spot, saving you time and stress.

In cases where damage is extensive or pipes are outdated, replacing the affected section may be the safest long-term solution. We’ll explain your options clearly and help you choose the right path forward for your home.

After repairs are complete, we look ahead. That may include adding insulation, sealing drafts near plumbing lines, and insulating exposed pipes to reduce the risk of future freezing. We’ll also share practical tips to help keep your pipes protected during the next cold snap.

Very nice technicians polite and did a great job tune up on my generator thank you
Aaron came for a 2nd successful visit. This time to figure out the cause of low/no water pressure in some of our H&C setups for 5 bathroom sinks. He left with 3 sinks H&C flowing freely & demonstrated the need for 2 new faucet installations so Hot H2O could be restored to the remaining sinks. Much appreciated as others had immediately started talking about replacing pipes without investigating less complicated solutions. As before, Aaron was a professional pleasure to have in our home & pricing will be the only holdup for us to continue with the faucet installations. Due to him, I have high hopes for the GEM electrician arriving next week & the HVAC maintenance later this month.

Tips for Preventing Frozen Pipes

A little preparation can make a big difference when temperatures drop.

Frozen pipes are often preventable with simple steps that protect vulnerable areas of your home and keep water moving safely through your plumbing system.

Open a faucet and allow a very small trickle of cold water to run–this helps keep the water moving in your pipes and prevents a freeze.

Keep warm air circulating around your pipes. Consider opening the doors to the under-sink cabinet to promote the flow of warm air. Place a small fan near your pipes and cabinets to keep air moving.

Make sure basement doors, windows, and crawl spaces are properly sealed and insulated. In colder areas of your home, consider installing storm windows and/or protective plastic covers.

Drain out your sprinkler system before the winter season, and make sure you disconnect and drain all outdoor hoses and water spigots. Insulate your external and/or exposed pipes further to protect them from the elements.

Frequently Asked Questions About Frozen Pipe Repair

What Should I Do if I Think My Pipes Are Frozen?

If you suspect a frozen pipe, act quickly. Turn off the water supply to your home to reduce the risk of flooding if the pipe bursts. Avoid using open flames or high heat to thaw pipes, as this can cause damage or create a fire hazard. Then call GEM right away.

Can Frozen Pipes Burst Even if I Don’t See Ice?

Yes, ice can form inside the pipe where you can’t see it, especially within walls or underground. As water freezes, it expands and creates pressure that can cause the pipe to crack or burst. You may not notice a problem until the ice thaws and water begins leaking.

How Long Does It Take to Repair Frozen Pipes?

Repair time depends on the extent of the freeze and whether the pipe has burst. In many cases, GEM can safely thaw a pipe and complete minor repairs in a single visit. If there’s significant damage, we’ll explain the next steps clearly and work efficiently to restore your plumbing as quickly as possible.

Are Certain Areas of My Home More at Risk for Frozen Pipes?

Yes. Pipes located in unheated spaces such as basements, crawl spaces, attics, garages, and exterior walls are more vulnerable during cold weather. Outdoor spigots and irrigation systems are also common trouble spots. Taking preventative measures in these areas can significantly reduce your risk.

Will Frozen Pipes Fix Themselves When Temperatures Rise?

While ice may eventually melt as temperatures warm up, that doesn’t mean the problem is resolved. Freezing can weaken pipes and create small cracks that worsen over time. It’s important to have your plumbing inspected to ensure everything is intact and functioning properly.
