Common Causes of Commercial Drain Clogs

Clogged drains are common. Over time, slow buildup can turn into a more serious issue. GEM’s drain cleaning department has inspected many drains over the years.

Some of the most common culprits are tree roots, food scraps, oil, and poor maintenance.

Tree Roots in Your Sewer Line

As trees grow, their roots search for moisture. Often, a tree root will discover water and nutrients in your pipes. This will cause the tree roots to penetrate your pipes. This can cause major clogs, and even burst pipes, especially in older drains.

Food Scraps in Kitchen Drains

Even the smallest food scraps can create a blockage in kitchen drain pipes, clogging the entire drain. Make sure to always clear scraps before washing dishes in the sink.

Oils &d Fats in Your Sink

Oils and fats used for cooking solidify when they reach room temperature. If those oils and fats are in your drain, they’ll harden and cause a blockage.

Poor Drain Maintenance

To best prevent clogs in commercial drains, regular drain cleaning is necessary. Over time, debris and sediment will collect and cause clogs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Commercial Drain Cleaning

What are the benefits of professional drain cleaning?

Professional drain cleaning is more thorough, provides preventative maintenance, and provides a maintenance log to ease future diagnoses.

What are the advantages of regular drain cleaning?

Regular drain cleaning prevents clogs, eliminates the cost of repair from damage by clogs, and reduces odors from dirty drain pipes.

Are drain cleaners safe?

Drain cleaners can be safe. But, many chemical-based drain cleaners can be corrosive and damage your pipes. Corrosive chemicals include lye, hydrochloric acid, and trichloroethane. We recommend alternative drain cleaning solutions that do not contain corrosive chemicals. Or, turn to a professional drain cleaning service.

How do plumbers unclog drains?

GEM Plumbing has cutting-edge equipment for all of your drain cleaning needs. Our hydro jetting equipment uses a special pressurized water hose that clears and maintains your pipes to properly clean any type of debris from your drain system.

What happens during a drain cleaning service?

During a drain cleaning service appointment, a licensed technician will inspect your system. They will then run a drain cleaning machine through your drains and pipes to clear out the source of the clog. Once the clog has been cleared, the technician will ensure that your fixtures are all working properly, then run a final inspection through your drain system using a camera.

My drain is clogged, what do I do?

If your drain is clogged, try these steps to resolve the issue. Turn on the faucet and fill the sink partly with water. If you have a double kitchen sink, plug one of the drains with a wet rag. If you’re trying to unclog the bathtub, plug the overflow hole with a wet rag. Next, use a cup plunger to plunge the open drain. Work the plunger up and down several times, then pull it off. Repeat this step a few times. If your drain is still clogged, call GEM Plumbing for professional help. Remember, never use chemical drain cleaners as they can be extremely harsh and cause corrosion to your pipes.

How often should I have my drains cleaned and serviced?

We recommend cleaning your bathroom, kitchen, and utility room drains at least once a year. Hair, soap scum, toothpaste, grime, toilet paper and other bathroom products can build up in your bathroom drain system and cause serious damage to your drains over time. With soaps, fats, grease and food all going down the drain in your kitchen sink, the inner walls of your kitchen pipes can easily get clogged, causing unwanted backup, even if you run your garbage disposal regularly. Dirt, debris, and other messes from daily life can clog up the floor drains in your basement, laundry room and/or utility room, leading to poor drainage and the potential for flooding.

What is hydro jetting?

For serious clogs in your sewer or drainage systems, GEM Plumbing uses High-Pressure Hydro Jetting to clear the line. These water lines can be long runs of 100 feet or more, underground, and inaccessible for snaking.

Why is hydro jetting a better way to clean drains?

Every interaction I have had with someone from Gem had been wonderful. Yesterday Bryan P and Anthony C came out to install dual units and they were so helpful, polite and respectful. They left my house looking beautiful and it was like they were never even there.
