Professional Backflow Preventer Care You Can Count On

Each maintenance visit focuses on safety, performance, and dependable operation.

GEM technicians follow a detailed process to evaluate your existing device and confirm its working correctly. Every step is designed to identify wear early and catch backflow preventer problems before they affect system performance:

Your technician begins by locating existing backflow preventers and performing a careful visual inspection. This step looks for corrosion, physical damage, or environmental conditions that could affect how the device operates, including nearby components such as shutoff valves and piping connections.

Internal components such as valves and seals are checked to confirm they move properly and remain in good condition. Identifying worn or weakened parts early helps prevent performance issues later.

Next, we’ll evaluate how your device responds to water pressure changes within your plumbing system. These checks confirm the mechanism reacts properly when conditions require the preventer to engage.

Any debris, buildup, or minor misalignments will be addressed during your visit. Cleaning and small adjustments help the device operate smoothly and reduce unnecessary strain on internal parts.

Once maintenance steps are completed, your technician will review the device under normal system conditions. This final verification confirms your preventer is functioning as intended.

When everything is complete, you’ll get service details and notes about the condition of your device so you have clear documentation of what was done for your records and to help guide future maintenance planning.

Tristan was very professional and knowledgable!
Got a problem with your well pump not working? Not a problem! Call Gem plumbing & heating services. Our 100’ deep well finally lived out its life and stopped working. Not a pleasant experience when suddenly you have to get water somewhere and start filling up buckets. I called on Saturday and they came by within a few hours. They checked the pressure tank first then the well. They came back Monday and installed the new pump. I couldn’t have asked for better service! They were there when I needed them!

Scheduling was poor but the service was good.
No answer as I got no formal ask.

However, he was, on time, polite, clean, efficient and answered all my questions ( I’m a retired engineer). I would ask for him on future appropriate jobs. Be good to him. He is of great value to you.
Vincent was terrific! He was able to identify the problem that caused a flood in my basement right away and fixed it.
Moreover he is so calm and personable. Took the time to teach me and lable the shut offs and showed genuine concern.
David is awesome!
We have used Gem several times for plumbing and HVAC. They have always been courteous, professional, and thorough. We will continue to use them for any plumbing needs in the future.
The plumber arrived on time, looked at the problem, told what he would be doing to fix it.(I had a leak in the main pipe leading from the toilet to the exit pipe)That had to be replaced, the toilet drained,a new line through the wall upstairs.A perfect clean up.Christopher was polite.
Always have a positive experience with GEM plumbing and heating whenever we need them. They are prompt, professional and competent. Totally recommend their services.
Very nice people,knowledgeable.
Fixed the problem quickly.
I had a very slow leak under sink. Very professional nice service guys came same day to diagnose the problem. It turned out to be the garbage disposal. Their estimate was $700 for the labor. My other quote for same work from a licensed plumber was $350. Shame I’m out $149 for the service call. I’m still giving 5 stars because I’m sure that this company does 5 star work – but price for the labor for this particular job was twice as much as elsewhere.
Polite, professional and work was completed fast!
Always reliable and courteous service! We have relied on GEM for regular maintenance, repair services, plumbing, new HVAC installation, and even shower installation. We feel we can cou t on GEM to be there when we need them and always perform great work.
The team I had was professional & friendly. Answered any questions I had along with explaining options.
Great job Anthony

Why Routine Backflow Preventer Maintenance Matters

Consistent service helps your plumbing system perform reliably year after year.

With regular maintenance, you can ensure your backflow prevention device works as intended, reduce the likelihood of developing issues over time, and gain these additional advantages:

Properly maintained backflow prevention devices help reduce the likelihood that contaminants enter your water supply. Your household water remains suitable for drinking, cooking, and everyday use.

Worn components can create vulnerabilities during pressure changes within your plumbing system. Addressing developing issues early helps lower the chances of unexpected water quality concerns.

Backflow prevention devices that function correctly place less strain on the surrounding plumbing system. Pipes, valves, and fixtures benefit from more balanced system performance.

Consistent maintenance helps limit unnecessary wear on internal components. Many homeowners are able to keep their backflow prevention devices functioning longer with routine care.

Minor issues identified early are less likely to develop into sudden failures. Staying ahead of problems can reduce the need for urgent service and unexpected repair costs.

Frequently Asked Questions About Backflow Preventer Maintenance

How do backflow preventers keep your water supply safe?

Backflow preventers stop water from reversing direction inside your plumbing system. When pressure changes occur, the device closes automatically to block contaminated water from entering the clean supply lines. This process helps keep the water flowing into your home separate from water that could carry chemicals, debris, or other pollutants.

How often should a backflow preventer be maintained?

Most backflow preventers should be maintained and tested once a year. Regular service helps confirm the device is operating correctly and allows potential issues to be identified early. Annual maintenance also helps keep the system aligned with local plumbing requirements.

What happens if a backflow preventer fails?

A failed backflow preventer can allow contaminated water to enter the clean water supply, potentially introducing serious health risks into household water. When problems are discovered during maintenance, repairs or replacement may be recommended to restore proper function. Addressing these issues promptly helps prevent larger plumbing concerns.

Can homeowners maintain backflow preventers themselves?

Homeowners can periodically check the surrounding area for visible damage or leaks. However, proper maintenance typically requires professional inspection, testing, and adjustments. GEM’s certified backflow testers have the tools and training needed to evaluate internal components and confirm correct operation.

Does maintenance help extend the life of the device?

Routine maintenance can help reduce wear on internal components. Inspections and minor adjustments keep the device functioning as intended and allow small issues to be addressed early. Consistent care often helps extend the useful life of the backflow preventer.
