How Does an Air Handler Work?

An air handler is the indoor unit of a heat pump that moves heated or cooled air throughout your home.

It contains the blower fan, coils, and filters that work together to circulate conditioned air through your ductwork. Think of it as the part of your HVAC system that makes sure the air actually reaches every room. With a heat pump, the air handler contains the coil that absorbs or releases heat, depending on the season, and the blower distributes that warmed or cooled air. It may also include electric heat strips that provide extra warmth on extremely cold days. A properly installed and maintained air handler ensures your system runs efficiently, maintains steady temperatures, and keeps air moving quietly and evenly through your home.

Alec and Scott made quick work of what turned out to be a simple solution. Very efficient, pleasant and explained the issue and recommendation clearly.
Both service calls to my house were with Nick, and I can't say enough good things about him. He's professional, courteous, communicative, and thorough. My only hiccup with Gem has been conflicting information from the office, but even with hiccups the staff have been professional and friendly. Thank you, Gem! You're the best, Nick!
great guy! vaery talented and professional
Joseph (Junior) from GEM Plumbing & Heating came out to do a check on our HVAC system for this season. He was very thorough, knowledgeable, and honest. Our system is in great shape after 16 years. Thank you Joe!!! We were on a contract plan, which was very reasonable, so we paid nothing at the time of service.
Our tech was Joseph (junior), Incredible experience came out the same day.Billed me for the service. Exceptional diagnostics, developed a number of options to fix the problem. We called four other places.First three never showed one showed and walked away, without figuring anything out. Our A/C has been out for 6 wks waiting for people to not show up. YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST CALL GEM FIRST
GEM responded very quickly. I was out of state when my tenant called stating the A/c system wasn't working. I called GEM to see if they would be willing to help me. I didn't have an account with them but they were more than willing to assist me with my broken A/C system.
Nick the technician was very knowledgeable and worked with me while I was out of state and with my tenants. He articulated very well, explaining all the issues, what the repair process would involve and the cost. There were no surprises. My tenants informed me that Nick was terrific !
Nick got the system up and running. Overall, it was a very positive experience and I would highly recommend GEM to anyone.
Great service. Timely response and got the job done. It’s on the pricey side but that’s expected given their quick response time. Joe was particularly good and have had him out twice on our property. Thanks!
From beginning to end the experience was amazing. It started with my man Walter who calmly with humor explained the process and my guys Ben and his partner who took cared of me and my family. They were professional and very knowledgeable about the process. Their patience when not finding my well was welcome. Awesome job

I had one of Gem Heating and Plumbing plumbers Christopher Rogan repair two broken gas line on an emergency basis. Chris was very professional, courteous and willing to make sure that the inspector was available once the job was completed. I was on a tight schedule to open the house. Gem Heating and Plumbing is a company that can be relied on.
Joan was very helpful – but his arrival was very delayed and communication was not great
They came over right away, diagnosed the problem and fixed it. Fast courteous service.
Chris from GEM arrived as scheduled and resolved a no hot water issue. I even got a GPS map for his truck to our location, and notified when he would arrive. No other company after several calls ( including one we have used for over 7 years would be able to help us for 10 days. With three women in the house that would not work.
Chris diagnosed and fixed our furnace which controls the hot water.
I will be using GEM in future for sure!
Excellent response, installation and knowledgeable services. Technicians were polite, prompt, professional, and kept us informed throughout the job. Would gladly use them for all future HVAC work and service.
Excellent knowledge followed by superior customer service
Jim was great! Pleasant, knowledgeable and helpful. He took the time to give me a few options and explained pros and cons. I am very thankful for his input and careful work! He replaced and upgraded faucets outside and new hoses to my washing machine!

Nick was great! He was presented with an unfixable AC problem. I was so impressed that he found this little piece of broken plastic tha caused such a water leak. He was very helpful in explaining options and estimate cost. He also climbed high up on a ladder inside and out to clean my filters. I’m so thankful.
!!
Employee was great. He explained what needed to be done and costs. Unfortunately, I had a leak in the AC line where it connected to a head unit on a system that I had installed by another company 4 years ago. All the refrigerant leaked out over that 4 year period. I feel this should have never happened and been found during their pressure test.
Anyhow, $3100 later, repaired. Just wished it hadn’t cost so much but not GEM’s fault. As far as the pricing, I have no idea.
Eric and the young lady were wonderful. They worked continuously and neatly all day
Michael M. from GEM was professional, knowledgeable, and courteous. He diagnosed the blockage problem and rectified it promptly. Five stars for his expertise!
David was a terrific through out the entire process. Great water filtration system installation and also great walking me through the process. Highly recommended.
Courteous, professional and a job well done. I will gladly refere and use Gem services again. Pricing was also responsible. Thank you

Signs You May Need a New Air Handler

Not sure whether it’s time to replace your air handler? These common symptoms often point to a failing or outdated air handler.

Here’s when we recommend considering a new air handler installation.

If some rooms feel comfortable while others barely receive airflow, internal components may be failing or your blower motor may be wearing out.

Grinding, squealing, or rattling often indicates worn bearings or loose components – signs the unit may be nearing the end of its lifespan.

A failing air handler uses more energy to move less air, which can increase your monthly utility costs.

If you’re scheduling repairs several times a year, replacing the air handler is typically more cost-efficient in the long run.

Different Types of Air Handlers From GEM

Different homes and HVAC setups call for different types of air handlers.

To find the right one for your home, it’s important to consider various factors and work with a professional who can evaluate your space, comfort needs, and existing system. GEM installs options that balance performance, efficiency, and cost. We offer:

These operate at one consistent speed. They’re affordable and reliable but may create noticeable temperature swings compared to newer technologies.

With both low and high settings, these offer improved airflow control, quieter performance, and better overall comfort.

These adjust motor speed continuously to match your home’s needs, delivering steady temperatures, excellent humidity control, and maximum energy efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions About Air Handler Installation

How long does an air handler installation take?

Most installations are completed in a single day, but timing depends on your home’s layout, ductwork, and system design. Before work begins, GEM’s technicians explain the timeline so you know exactly what to expect and how long your system will be offline.

Should I replace my outdoor unit at the same time?

Not always. If your outdoor unit is in good condition and compatible with the new air handler, replacing one component may be the most cost-effective option. GEM evaluates both pieces of equipment to ensure they’re properly matched for efficiency, performance, and longevity.

What size air handler is right for my home?

Sizing depends on airflow needs, duct design, insulation levels, and the performance of your heating and cooling equipment. GEM takes detailed measurements and performs a full evaluation to make sure your new air handler is correctly matched and optimized for your home.

Will a new air handler help lower my energy bills?

In many cases, yes. Modern air handlers use high-efficiency motors and better airflow controls, reducing the strain on your HVAC system. When your system doesn’t work as hard, you’ll typically see more consistent comfort and lower energy costs.

How long does an air handler typically last?

Most last 10-15 years, but their lifespan varies based on maintenance, usage, and equipment quality. Routine tune-ups – especially through GEM’s Home Comfort Club – can keep your system running longer and help prevent major breakdowns.
