Emergency Plumbing Repairs

While clogged toilets, leaking taps, and lack of hot water are inconvenient, they’re not plumbing emergencies. However, some issues require immediate attention. Any problem that threatens your health or poses an immediate hazard to your home warrants an emergency plumbing repair.

At GEM Plumbing & Heating, we have the experience and expertise to repair the issue and effectively restore the operation of your plumbing system.

Some of the most common plumbing emergencies we respond to include:

  • Burst pipes: Any burst pipe can disgorge considerable amounts of water that can damage flooring, drywall, and personal possessions. And if the water makes contact with electrical wiring, it can cause short circuits and create a risk of electric shock or fire.
  • Sewage backups: Overflowing toilets and sewage backups require immediate attention. The contaminated water that backs up within your home is laden with bacteria and toxins that can negatively impact your health.
  • Water heater failure: Low water pressure, popping/bubbling sounds, yellow pilot lights, and rotten egg odors are signs of critical water heater failure. If left unresolved, these issues can ignite fires, cause the water heater to burst, or emit toxic CO emissions into your home.
  • Gas leaks: Sulfurous or rotten egg odors are the most common signs of a natural gas leak. Other signs include hissing or whistling sounds, headaches, difficulty breathing, and dizziness. Any time a gas leak is suspected, it needs the prompt, immediate attention of a licensed and insured gas line plumber.
  • Loss of water: Loss of all water pressure can be a sign of a clog, burst pipe, and other issues. A qualified plumber should immediately inspect this issue, as it indicates a critical failure that could significantly damage your home or landscape.

Steps To Take In a Plumbing Emergency

When faced with a plumbing emergency, there are some crucial steps you should take to minimize the hazards to your health and home, including:

  • If there are water leaks, flip the main circuit breaker.
  • If there’s a natural gas leak, evacuate the house immediately and turn off the main gas shut-off valve (usually located by the meter).
  • Turn the water off at the shut-off valve.
  • Turn off your water heater.
  • Soak up any visible pooling water.
